ABOUT TDI
Tom Harris incorporated TDI in 2019 as he was finishing up his career in residential treatment as a therapist, after 26 years of developing and fine-tuning a Therapeutic Drumming program for at-risk children and adolescents. He began optimizing the effective intervention he had used for decades in that residential treatment for implementation in public school settings and other community-based agencies.
Tom used his decades of study of traditional West African Djembe drumming and his knowledge of Djembe drumming and its traditional culture to craft a powerful and engaging intervention. It is effective in providing children, youth and other populations an environment in which to actively heal, grow and overcome traumas and other challenges. Learning to play this ancient instrument in community offers each individual benefits, such as self-regulation, focus, improved sense of self-efficacy, competence and joy, even as it produces group benefits including a sense of safe and accepted belonging, and exploring a new way to develop and use one’s voice in community.
Meet the TDI Team

Tom Harris has worked in Therapeutic Wilderness Camps, Residential Treatment Centers, Intensive Outpatient Treatment Programs and in school systems as a facilitator/trainer/consultant for over 40 years. In 1996 he began playing the djembe, a hand drum from West Africa, and quickly began to develop a therapeutic intervention for children and youth using this drum and the culture that it came from. Since then, he has trained and certified over 200 professionals in the TDI model of Therapeutic Drumming, built over 5000 drums, performed over 2000 times in public with young people he has taught and become a highly effective presenter and trainer at national and international conferences for educators and therapists.
As he was finishing up his career in residential treatment as a therapist in 2019, after 26 years of developing and fine-tuning a Therapeutic Drumming program for at-risk children and adolescents, Tom incorporated Therapeutic Drumming Interventions and began adapting this highly effective program for use in public school settings. Alex has studied and played djembe and dunun since 2017. He has studied with a number of professional djembe teachers from West Africa and has performed and played professionally with several African Drum and Dance groups extensively. He plays for numerous dance classes in the Tallahassee community and is in demand around the southeast as a support and lead drummer for conferences and professional trainings. His quiet and thoughtful presence with our Tallahassee training cohort has been significantly helpful this year.

Mike Long played a variety of percussion growing up in middle and high school including snare, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, some mallets and marching band snare, bass, and tritoms. Then after many years of “air drumming”, he heard the wonderful sounds of West African music, performed by the band Rhythmicity and jumped on a Djembe. Soon after, he joined Rhythmicity and has been hooked on the music ever since. Today, he is a member of the band, One Tribe.
Mike considers himself a student of the Djembe and has had the privilege of learning from West African master teachers including Bolokada Conde, Fode Camara, Aly Camara, Aboucar Sylla, and Amo Damas, as well as Forrest Matthews, Beverly Botsford, Ronnie Pulley and Robin “Bountourabi” Leftwich and others.
He thoroughly enjoys teaching and helping folks with their specific goals along their rhythmic journey. Mike founded “Homestead Drumming” in 2017 and is dedicated to educating students on West African rhythms by providing individual and group lessons and workshops, and encouraging community involvement.
He was excited to be invited to join TDI as a support trainer in 2023 and looks forward to bringing his many talents to the endeavor.
OUR MISSION
We believe in the profound impact of rhythmic activities and drumming as therapeutic tools.
Our mission is to cultivate an all-embracing and respectful environment that celebrates the diversity of individuals who choose to participate in our programs. We wholeheartedly affirm every person's inherent worth and ensure that they are not only welcomed but also encouraged to contribute in meaningful and joyful ways.
Through our training programs, we empower school districts and community groups to create transformative healing experiences. By providing comprehensive support and guidance, we enable these individuals to access their inner strength, fostering resilience and positive change within themselves and their communities.
Our commitment goes beyond merely facilitating drumming sessions; it encompasses creating a space where participants feel seen, heard, and valued. We strive to forge connections, inspire personal growth, and ignite a sense of belonging through the rhythmic journey we embark upon together. At Therapeutic Drumming Interventions, we embrace the power of drumming to heal and transform mind, body and spirit.
